How to Get Married in Raleigh, North Carolina
As a Raleigh wedding and elopement photographer I speak with lots of recently engaged couples who have no idea where to start in finding information on the marriage process. So what is the actual process of applying for a marriage certificate and marriage itself? What are the steps?
The Marriage License
First, you must have a marriage license before the wedding.
To apply for a marriage license head to the Register of Deeds in any county in the state. In general, both partners must visit the office, however some counties allow online applications to be submitted before visiting the office to save time.
Applicants for a marriage license will pay a fee and fill out a form stating their names, ages, marital status, and intention to marry.
The Register of Deeds may require proof of age, such as a government-issued ID or birth certificate. For more requirements head here.
A marriage license expires after 60 days so make sure to have your ceremony before the 60 days is up!
The Ceremony
A wedding can be performed by a magistrate or by any minister who is ordained in a religious denomination or authorized by a church. Judges cannot perform marriage ceremonies. If you choose to have someone who is ordained online perform your ceremony be mindful that North Carolina does not accept many online ordinations!
Marriages can also be performed in the recognized manner of any religious denomination that does not use officiants, or in the recognized manner of any federally or state-recognized Native American tribe.
After your ceremony has been performed, mail your signed and completed marriage license back to the Register of Deeds. You should receive a marriage certificate back in the mail several weeks later. Then you’re married!
