Step One- Apply for your Marriage License:

The first step in the marriage process is to apply for your marriage license. Head to your local Register of Deeds to fill out an application for your marriage license.

Both parties must be present in person to apply for a marriage license. The cost is $60, and you’ll need a valid government-issued ID and proof of your social security number.

Step Two-The Marriage Ceremony :

After receiving your valid marriage license, you’ll have 60 days to have a marriage ceremony performed in North Carolina.

At the Wake County Justice Center 300 S. Salisbury St, Raleigh NC 27601, you can have your ceremony performed by a Magistrate, Monday - Friday, 9:30am - 11:30am and 1:30pm - 3:30pm.

Make sure you remember to bring two witnesses, 18 years of age or older, and government issued photo ID!

Wake County Justice Center Marriage Process:

After arriving at the Justice Center, you’ll head to the second floor to the Register of Deeds and will pay $50 cash for your ceremony. No appointments are needed – just walk in!

After paying you’ll head to the 9th floor, room 901 with your receipt to be married by a Magistrate. Please be aware that certain days, like Friday, tend to have longer waits for a ceremony!

Ceremonies typically take 10-15 minutes and after your ceremony has been performed you should receive a marriage certificate back in the mail several weeks later.
